Just Cause series developer Avalanche Studios is in the business of making open-worlds, and the big plan is to make the best open-worlds that the rest of the world has ever seen. The best worlds… the world… has ever seen. Like one of those recursive mirror images that make your brain hurt, but with more guns, explosions and unremitting chaos.
“We are set on becoming the best open world developer. That’s our ultimate goal,” Avalanche boss Christofer Sundberg told Eurogamer. “It’s a very competitive genre. Rockstar is more of a phenomenon than a competitor. What we can offer to the genre is diversity, which very few other open world developers can.”
Released back in 2010 to critical acclaim, Just Cause 2 was hailed by some (and not others) as the best open world game to date, although – significantly – it lacked a multiplayer component. This was recently introduced to the game via a community-made mod that supports over 1000 players at a time. But maybe that was better left to the community anyway.
“What the guys have done now with the multiplayer mod is fantastic, and it completely came out of left field. So we have them to thank for a lot. It’s even too crazy for Just Cause. If we had done it it would have been more planned. Since it’s a mod, it’s just like DayZ, they can get away with a lot, which we wouldn’t be able to unfortunately as a developer,” explained Sundberg.
Although it’s not yet been announced, Just Cause 3 is rumoured to be in development already for next-gen consoles and PC.
