rAge NAG LAN boasts 300Mbps, 7TB ADSL

3 October 2012

As PC gaming has marched into the era of online authentication and online-only multiplayer modes, so an internet connection has become a necessity for modern LAN gamers.

The NAG LAN @ rAge is no exception, and due to its size (2,500+ gamers) it is of paramount importance that gamers know they can attend the event and also get online to authenticate the various games they wish to play.

The open NAG LAN will utilise 30 x 10Mbps aggregated ADSL lines, with Afrihost providing the bandwidth, which according to an Afrihost representative, will be unshaped. Afrihost said that this is their way of showing support for the SA gaming community.

Afrihost will not be managing the connection from their side, but rest assured that the NAG LAN organisers will be to make sure that only essential gaming-related traffic passes through the network (leave your torrent downloading for home).

Erich Blaschczok of the VC Crew, the technical team in charge of making the NAG LAN happen, explained that “The [Afrihost] account has been setup to allow a single account to be accessed from 33 locations while all sharing the same data allocation. Additional data has been added to facilitate testing. Gamers agree that latency kills the game, and testing of Afrihost infrastructure proved that very low response values (pings) are the order of the day.”
