Electronic Arts has stepped-in to oppose the United States Defense of Marriage Act, in a continuing show of support for equal rights – something the company has been backing strongly.

The Defense of Marriage Act defines a marriage as between one man and one woman, which results in federal rights, such as joint taxes, unpaid leave for sick spouses and social security, to only be eligible for male/female marriages.

EA has now joined a coalition of businesses which form the Human Rights Campaign (HRC). The HRC supports the Respect for Marriage Act, which recognises all legal marriages for the mentioned federal purposes.

Fantastic. I hope more and more companies join and put pressure on the US government to create a federal amendment to the constitution allowing for same-sex marriage across the country.

It’s time something drastic happened to give people the equal rights they deserve, rather than waiting for the states to decide individually and the citizens to debate among themselves. It’s ridiculous that it’s taken this long, and sad that it’s taken any time at all.
