In mid December last year Gamasutra asked its readers to vote for their game of the decade. The concept of “Game of the Year” may seem trite to some, and indeed “Game of the Decade” may come across as even more banal.
Despite this, the publication which caters largely to industry professionals and more mature gamers, asked its readers to answer a question.
“Gamasutra is asking its users to vote for their ‘Game Of The Decade’ — the video game title that they think was the absolute best of the last ten years, from January 2000 to date. Name the game, and then explain why it mattered to you and what differentiates it from the multitude of others released in the last decade?”
Once all the votes were in they were tallied and put into the list which follows.

3. Half Life 2
4. Shadow of Colossus
5. Grand Theft Auto III
6. Halo: Combat Evolved
7. Portal
8. Super Mario Galaxy
9. Mass Effect
10. Metroid Prime
11. The Sims
12. Wii Sports
As we predicted World of Warcraft took top honours while Diablo 2 did not even make the top 12. Other interesting omissions from the list include Gears of War, Fallout 3, Oblivion and Call of Duty 4.
Gamasutra has included various comments from different people who voted for the top game of the decade explaining why the chosen games deserved their spots.
