Sequels are great, they allow developers to build on established and proven concepts, generate revenue and in the best cases give players evolved and improved follow ups to their favourite games. However, an industry cannot survive on sequels alone, and the true heroes of game development are the studios that take risks and develop new concepts, stories and ultimately franchises.
2010 is already looking very promising in terms of game releases. Star Craft 2, Mass Effect 2, God of War 3 and Bioshock 2 are sure to make 2010 one of the best years for gaming in recent times. Of course it is easy to get excited about sequels, but the truly exciting games are those which we know little about.
2010 already has its fair share of these games lined up. These are our most anticipated.
R.U.S.E
Originally scheduled for a 2009 release, Ubisoft’s real time strategy promises deep and challenging gameplay that will force players to make use of subterfuge and deception. Players will be able to lure enemies into traps, create decoys and use other ruses to defeat their enemies.
Heavy Rain
Heavy Rain is being developed by Quantic Dream, the same studio responsible for the critically acclaimed Omikron: The Nomad Soul. The game promises dark film noir themes and a level of character interaction that has yet to be seen in a game. The lofty ideals outlined by the game’s director David cage make it one of the most ambitious games ever made. Heavy Rain is scheduled for release in February.
Darksiders
Set for release later this week, Darksiders has already received excellent reviews. Read the full preview
Brink
Brink is developer Splash Damage’s first fresh IP. The game offers a unique elevator pitch in that it combines team based multiplayer missions with an authored narrative.
Alan Wake
This highly anticipated game comes from the creators of Max Payne; Remedy Entertainment. Inspired by the likes of Twin Peaks, Lost and various works by Stepen King, Alan Wake has been described as a psychological thriller.
