Rumour: Infinity Ward won’t be developing Modern Warfare 3

7 January 2010

According to VG247 developer Infinity Ward will not be making the next Modern Warfare game. The site credits the information to an unnamed source.

Infinity Ward is generally regarded as the better of the two developers which share the Call of Duty franchise. The studio boldly took the series from its traditional WWII setting to modern times with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare; a bold move which paid off hugely. According to VG247’s source, the studio will move on to work on something new now that it is finished with Modern Warfare 2.

One would assume that the next game from Infinity Ward would be a follow up to Modern Warfare 2, however, in October last year studio figurehead Robert Bowling had this to say:

“Right now we don’t have a clue what our next game is going to be, and we won’t know what it will be until we finish with Modern Warfare 2, which won’t be for a while.”

Another fact which lends credibility to the story is that when Infinity Ward renewed its contract with Activision last year, they noted that the new deal “laid the groundwork and kick started our future project, as well as the possibility of a unique new IP by Infinity Ward, that we’ll have complete control over”.

VG247 also stated that another unnamed source suggested that developer Sledgehammer games might be contracted by publisher Activision to develop the game.

Activision had not commented at the time of publishing. The publisher’s silence has been interpreted by some as confirmation that Infinity Ward is moving on. Of course the entire ordeal remains a rumour until either Activision or Infinity Ward make an official statement. However, the move would make sense, and given Infinity Ward’s comments last year it may well be that the developer wants to break out of the series for which it has become so well known.
