Darksiders ships 1.2 million units, sequel confirmed

Darksiders developers THQ have announced today that the action adventure title sold 1.2 million units in its first week of retail.

In response to this the develops have confirmed that a sequel to the game, which sees the player take on the role of ‘War’ – one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse, will be released at some stage in doesn’t exactly smash records (Mass Effect 2 shifted 2 million units in its first week), it certainly is impressive for a new IP. Borderlands – 2009’s most successful fresh IP had sold just 2 million units by December, despite having been released in October.

Regarding the success of THQ, CEO Brian Farell recently revealed that things are looking positive:

“We are pleased to report solid profitability in the third quarter and we are on track to achieve all of our fiscal 2010 financial targets that we announced at the beginning of the fiscal year,” he said. “This marks a significant turnaround for THQ in just one year and underscores the success of our focused strategy and reduced cost structure.”

“In addition to meeting our financial targets, we launched two new franchises, UFC and Darksiders, and significantly strengthened our balance sheet. We also secured new long-term license agreements and continued to migrate our brands to digital platforms in order to drive THQ’s growth over the next several years.”
