Sims 4 a “single-player offline experience”

Following the announcement of The Sims 4 coming to PC and Mac in 2014, EA and Maxis have pushed out one bit of information.

“The Sims 4 celebrates the heart and soul of the Sims themselves, giving players a deeper connection with the most expressive, surprising and charming Sims ever in this single-player offline experience.”

It is interesting to note the special mention of The sims 4 being a “single-player offline” game. I don’t want to presume too much, but could this clarification be due to the gamer outrage caused by the SimCity reboot being built around an always-online social meta-game?

As those who have been keeping up with industry news will know, SimCity did not fare very well with critics and gamers alike (making its way into our list of worst user rated games of 2013 so far) due to a botched launch and shoddy multiplayer mechanics (that’s before we even got into the shallow and buggy gameplay).

Still, it’s a no-brainer to assume that The Sims 4 will require at the very least an EA Origin account and a once-off activation in order to be played.

EA hinted at some new player content creation tools and the ability to share their creations.

“The Sims 4 encourages players to personalize their world with new and intuitive tools while offering them the ability to effortlessly share their creativity with friends and fans.”

I find it quite ironic that EA chose to give Simcity multi-player over the Sims. IMO the Sims has a much greater option for multi-player than Simcity had. I guess the fact that Sims4 will be offline is the closest thing that we will ever get to an acknowledgement of a mistake and an apology from EA.
