Man exports PS2s to fund terrorism

3 March 2010

United States Federal Authorities have revealed that a man who had been exporting PlayStation 2’s to a shopping centre in Paraguay may have been using this vehicle to fund terrorist organisation Hezbollah.

Khaled Safadi of Doral, a Miami suburb – Paraguayan citizen with US residency, has been indicted on eleven counts of funding terrorism. According to Kotaku the man sold $720 00 worth of PS2 consoles to the store using false addresses and documents to conceal their origin.

For the time being Safadi is out on bail of $1.55 million. In a court hearing his lawyer held up a PS2 console and declared “It’s a children’s toy. He is being accused of shipping a children’s toy to Paraguay.”

It all seems a little fishy. If the shipments were really as innocent as Safadi’s lawyer might have the jury believe why then would the defendant have falsified addresses and documents to a recipient which the US government had earmarked for terrorist activities?
