2K Sports to make a rugby game?

2K Sports has laid claim as one of the premier sports publishers in the business, and its development studios have taken over the basketball, ice-hockey and baseball genre bragging right for a few years, but would 2K Sports ever branch out further?

MyGaming caught up with 2K Sports’ Senior Director of Marketing Chris Snyder and asked whether 2K Sports is looking to broaden its scope, maybe even branching into rugby, to cater for markets such as South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and Europe.

“There’s always the idea to branch into new sports,” said Snyder. “The guys at head office are very very smart, so yeah, if it makes sense from a business perspective to reach into new sporting codes and types, 2K Sports will definitely be there.”

“That was the case with WWE; it made sense for 2K Sports to pick it up from THQ,” said Snyder, referring to the acquisition of the WWE video game IP from the bankruptcy and consequential auction of THQ’s properties.

2K Sports’ upcoming games include NBA 2K14 and WWE 2K14, which are set for releases on 4 October and 1 November respectively. MyGaming got a little closer to the two games, including hands-on with WWE 2K14, and we’ll be bringing impressions of those soon.
