What the volcanic ash cloud means for local gamers

20 April 2010

It seems as though some flight schedules are getting back on track, following a week of delayed flight patterns thanks to a volcano erupting in Iceland, spewing forth a massive volcanic ash cloud into the atmosphere which airlines deemed unsafe to fly through.

So what does this mean for gamers? Well, most games and hardware are flown into South Africa from UK/Europe, and with flights being delayed, we can expect possible shortages of new games coming in.

BTGames published that a number of games have been confirmed as delayed. Dead to Rights, the God of War Collection, and Scene-It have all been delayed, and now have unknown ETAs.

A Megarom representative confirmed that the only title from their side that will face delays is Dead to Rights. A SterKinekor rep also confirmed that the God of War Collection delay would be felt around the country.

It looks like it won’t only be games that are delayed due to flights being postponed. Local AMD regional sales manager Jaco Laubscher confirmed that they were officially facing delays on newer product coming into the country. However, thanks to there being current stock in local supply, most items should be readily available. Newer products, such as AMD’s upcoming 6-core Phenom II CPUs will be delayed, although details remain sketchy, and it is difficult to predict an ETA.

A Prophecy.co.za representative also confirmed that their channel partners were facing delays on stock coming in due to the volcanic ash cloud, although it was unclear exactly what products were likely to run out in the next few days. Again, thanks to stock currently existing in local distribution channels, the majority of hardware sales will not be affected.

At this stage, a lot is still up in the air*, and as long as flight delays don’t last too much longer, the majority of games and hardware will remain unaffected.

*irresistible…
