Sony has announced the PS Vita TV – a new console for use in your home that plugs into your TV and gives access to video content and games services, as well as being able to stream to smart TVs across your home. It is capable of playing PS Vita game cards and can stream games running on the PS4 to another TV across our home network.
Sony says the PS Vita TV will make its debut in Japan on 14 November at a price equivalent to US $95. The console is not expected to be released anywhere else in the world for some time.
Sony says the Vita TV is based on the same hardware found in the Vita and offers a selection of games from the entire Playstation 1 stable, as well as most Vita games. The controller is a remodeled Dualshock 3 from the Playstation 3 and the console will support any game that can make use of the analog controls.
The PS Vita TV will additionally work with a number of streaming services, playing HD content from Hulu, Netflix and even Sony Video Unlimited. The device is also compatible with a number of streaming services available in Japan. There are also apps for connecting to social networks such as Twitter and Facebook, as well as an E-reader.
The killer app to come with the Vita TV is wireless streaming. Like the regular Vita, the Vita TV is able to wirelessly stream games from your Playstation 4 to your TV across a local Wi-Fi network with minimal lag and almost full functionality.
This means that those of you who keep your consoles on the shelves elsewhere in the living room no longer have to run expensive HDMI cables through your walls and to the TV.
It is unknown at this stage if the Vita TV will be compatible with Sony’s Gaikai streaming service, which it will use for backwards compatibility on the PS4 for games found on older Playstation consoles.
