Despite the fact that Modern Warfare developer Infinity War is in shambles at the moment, and various legal battles are continuing between the studio’s founders and Activision, the publisher has confirmed that they will be releasing three full CoD games in the next two years.
Activision CEO Bobby Kotick recently announced “As for COD, they’ve confirmed three games in the next two years. Seeing as how there is a pattern of one new COD game every year, this is one new COD game from one new developer, and in a different genre from the core games we’ve seen.”
The next Call of Duty release will be from Treyarch, who last bought us Call of Duty 5: World at War, which was generally agreed to be their best CoD yet. With key development staff leaving the franchise leaders Infinity Ward, it remains to be seen what sort of product the next Modern Warfare turns out to be.
A third Call of Duty is being developed by Sledghammer Games, and it is expected that it will be an action/adventure game.
Is Activision milking the franchise dry? Do they honestly expect to reiterate the massive sales seen on Modern Warfare 2 with each subsequent release, especially if they are putting them so close together. Remember, Activision has been criticised for milking the Guitar Hero franchise too hard, with sales steadily declining.
