On Friday Activision showed the world a teaser video of the next iteration to come from one of the most successful video game franchises of all time; Call of Duty. A release date – November 9, 2010 – was also provided. Unofficially dubbed Call of Duty 7, or more accurately, Call of Duty: Black Ops, the teaser video doesn’t give us much, and it is clear that it was designed to get people asking more questions than it actually answers.
It is known that the game will take place from around the early 60’s to possible the mid to late 70’s While we are pretty sure Vietnam will be featured in Black Opps, it looks like there will be a lot more to it than that war.
Shortly before the USA became directly involved in the Vietnam conflict (1965), it invaded Cuba (1961). CoD 7 will draw heavily on these two conflicts, and there is evidence in the sneak peak video of both. However, what remains a mystery is the appearance of snowy terrain in the video, which expands the potential scope of the game.
What is quite interesting is that the entire trailer is seen through the eyes of a man seemingly strapped to a chair, being tortured, with various pieces of gameplay being portrayed as his memories. If you watch the video closely, you will see that in the laboratory, there is an LED displaying the numbers 2010:03:02, which could well be the date.
This suggests the game may have players playing through the memories of a Black Ops soldier who took part in Vietnam can Cuba, as well as other unidentified conflicts.
There also appears to be gameplay footage of the player piloting a helicopter, which would be an interesting development for the series.
As I mentioned before, the video asks more questions than it answers, although it has been confirmed that it will features Vietnamese, Cuban and Arctic locations. Our guess is that we will be playing through the painful memories of a special forces operative, and that there may way be some alternative reality plot weaving based on real historic events.
