EA files Darkspore trademark

10 May 2010

Spore was a smashing commercial success in 2008, despite annoying DRM schemes and less than enthusiastic critical reviews. Unlikely to let a sleeping franchise lie, EA has filed for trademarks to the title of ‘Darkspore.’

As pointed out by Superannuation this is probably the Spore title that was yet to be announced, as mentioned in EA’s last Q4 report.

After reading through the trademark filings, it would appear that Darkspore will feature online multiplayer elements, and will also be making its way onto handheld devices. Covering all the bases, there is also filing for the trademark under action figures, board games, playing cards, and figurines.

Now all that is left is to speculate on the dark nature of Spore. Perhaps one will play the role of dark matter, blinking in and out of existence for a microsecond, thereby saving the player from enduring the mind-numbing process of evolving an entire biologically based civilisation.
