id Software creative director Tim Willits has spoken out about Doom 4, which was little more than a rumour last week, saying: “Hopefully, it’ll be even more awesome than Rage. For us as a company, every game needs to be better than the last.”
With Rage not even out the door yet, it may seem slightly premature to talk about how awesome Doom 4 is going to be, but it is nice to know that we will see another instalment in the franchise that put FPS on the gaming map.
Willits continues by saying: “I truly believe that Rage is the best game we’ve ever made. When we made Doom 3 I said, ‘Doom 3 is the best game we’ve ever made and Rage will be better.’ Hopefully. Doom 4 needs to be even more awesome than Rage.” Willits was speaking at a recent Bethesda press event.
Bethesda’s Pete Hines also shared his views on the id Software and Rage, saying that id’s true potential will be shown soon, thanks to the upcoming Rage. Hines said that having id within the Bethesda family (id Software was acquired by Zenimax media in late 2009) is a tremendous advantage, due to the wealth of FPS development experience they have. I would also think that having one of the best lead programmers in the business (John Carmack) is quite an advantage as well.
Information and screenshots of Rage have been trickling out and so far it is looking quite enticing. A Doom 4 announcement is expected at Quakecon, taking place in August 2010. Thanks to VG247 for the coverage of the Bethesda press event.
