Guitar Hero 6 won’t feature celebrity musicians

17 May 2010

Activision has decided that the next iteration of its popular Guitar Hero franchise will not feature any celebrity musicians or bands.

This comes after numerous lawsuits and public disputes took place between the publisher and various music industry personalities, such as No Doubt, Courtney Love and Jon Bon Jovi.

Apparently, despite these and other artists signing off on their likenesses being used in the game, when it came down to the game being released, they didn’t like it much. I can see how the image of Kurt Cobain singing Simple Plan songs would irritate his ex-wife, but it is still unclear why she and others allowed Activision to use various likenesses in the first place.

There may be some sort of celebrity involvement in Guitar Hero 6, but it is likely to be more controlled. I think the biggest gripe these musicians had was seeing themselves performing songs from bands that they saw as less credible.
