850,000 PS3s sold in Aus, that’s a lot more than SA

18 May 2010

Sony Computer Entertainment Australia head Michael Ephraim has announced that his region has surpassed 850,000 PS3 consoles sold. Sony aims to tip the 1 million mark by the end of this year.

The console has traditionally played underdog to the Xbox 360 in Australia. This is changing though, and Sony is reportedly closing the gap fast since the launch of the PS3 slim.

Microsoft announced last month that it had sold 1 million Xbox 360s between Australia and New Zealand, although it did not provide a more detailed breakdown.

Reflecting the global market, Nintendo is far ahead of both Sony and Microsoft in Australia, with 1.7 million Wiis and 2.5 million DS consoles sold.

These are impressive figures, considering that there are only around 22 million people living in Australia.

Console sales figures are difficult to get hold of in SA. Neither Microsoft nor Sony have agreed to release this information to MyGaming.

Insider mumblings however suggest that both consoles are sitting on around 100,000 units sold locally, although this is strictly unconfirmed. If it is true, then SA’s gaming market is roughly 10 times smaller than Australia’s, despite having 28 million more people living here.
