WinAmp, a media player which was there at the dawn of the digital media revolution, is soon to be consigned to Internet oblivion.

News of the shutdown of WinAmp emerged in November 2013, followed by rumours that Microsoft is interested in buying the player and Shoutcast, a media streaming service from AOL.
The rumour of a potential acquisition by Microsoft was reported by TechCrunch, which warned that it could just be “wishful thinking”.
Both WinAmp and Shoutcast were developed by Nullsoft, which was acquired by AOL in 1999.
In a report on the era-ending announcement, Ars Technica quoted former WinAmp employees who had previously blamed AOL’s mismanagement for the media player’s demise.
With the shutdown of Winamp.com imminent, and with no certainty as yet what the fate of Winamp and its plugin library will be, it is advisable to get it while you can.
