Radionomy, a radio aggregation service headquartered in Brussels, Belgium, announced in a press release on Tuesday, 14 January 2014 that it has acquired Winamp and ShoutCast from AOL.
Terms of the deal were not officially disclosed, but TechCrunch, which first reported on the rumours of the acquisition, said that the deal is worth between $5- and $10-million, with AOL taking a 12% stake in Radionomy.
TechCrunch reported that the stake is financial, and not strategic.
“Winamp is a top independent player that gives millions of people the best player functionality available,” Alexandre Saboundjian, CEO of Radionomy Group was quoted as saying.
“Its role is clear in the future evolution of online media – we plan to make the player ubiquitous, developing new functionalities dedicated to desktop, mobile, car systems, connected devices and all other platforms,” Saboundjian said.
Radionomy will also give Winamp listeners access to its networks of online radio stations.
