Nvidia manager killed trying to rescue man from train tracks

27 January 2014

Nvidia marketing manager Philip Scholz was tragically killed on Friday, 24 January, as he attempted to rescue a man who was trapped on the train tracks at a commuter station in Santa Clara, California.

The Mercury News reports that the man was trying to get off the tracks, and as an express train was entering the station at between 80-110km/h.

Both men were hit by the train -Scholz died on the tracks and the man he was trying to help survived. The unidentified survivor is in a critical condition in hospital.

Unable to speak to investigators, it is unknown how and why the unidentified man was on the tracks. Surveillance footage shows that Scholz may have been talking to the man before making the rescue attempt.

Nvidia co-founder Chris Malachowsky said the act “completely resonates with something consistent with the guy. He was confident, aggressive, capable, I could see that without a moment’s hesitation, he’s going to act.”

“I’m sure his knee-jerk, no hesitation to help someone else is what caused this — he goes down as a hero in my book.”
