Farmville is pretty much the hottest thing on Facebook. Which isn’t admittedly saying very much for a site that’s mostly about getting back in touch with everyone you hated at school and pretending you’re interested in their stupid lives now. Especially when, statistically, 20% of them are spamming your news feed with their Farmville updates.
Accordingly, Time’s just included Farmville in their list of 50 Worst Inventions, slagging off the dastardly application for being “hardly even a game — it’s more a series of mindless chores on a digital farm, requiring the endless clicking of a mouse to plant and harvest crops”, as well as the “many hours of lost productivity” it’s responsible for.
Of course, this sounds reasonable enough until you stop and consider that, really, “a series of mindless chores”, “endless clicking of a mouse”, and “many hours of lost productivity” describes the fundamental mechanics of just about every game ever. In the vernacular, I think this works out to a blandly rhetorical “lol?”.
