New MSSA president discusses future of eSport in SA

Speaking during an interview with Mweb Gamezone, new Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) president Simphiwe Maphumulo said he wants its disciplines, including eSports, to become a viable profession, and popular on a scale such that eSport is represented at events like the All Africa Games.

The MSSA doesn’t just represent the video gaming side of things, but also table top games and traditional games, such as Morabaraba. Maphumulo said that those who play games recreationally need to become aware of the MSSA and what it does so that talent can be groomed.

Maphumulo also wants the MSSA to become a recognised name by the public, saying “The more people know about us, the better we can ‘get things done'”.

“I see eSports having a huge following in RSA in the near future because technology is always improving,” said Maphumulo.

Maphumulo said that eSports in South Africa has a bright future and is sustainable, but lacks good support structure, and this is where the MSSA comes in to prepare gamers to enter a world of professional gaming.

“The biggest stumbling block in South Africa is the gamers who continue to remain outside of the structure. The only way for gamers to get what they want is to join the MSSA. It is through being part of an active community that is both informed and responsible that gamers can effectively influence the decision making process,” said Maphumulo.

Maphumulo said the MSSA will approach government to discuss infrastructure and venues required to support eSports.

Maphumulo encouraged professional gamers to join the MSSA. “Only [MSSA] registered players are able to officially represent South Africa,” said Maphumulo, adding that this is similar to how all professional sports are handled in SA.

Hi gamers this is Simphiwe Maphumulo, MSSA President. I will answer a few questions that you have posted. I would like to thank all valid questions, these are appreciated but all those false allegations: remember that I have a full time career as an auditor, now imagine what my bosses would say if they read this? I must say that action will be taken against such comments. I will answer them per person. Admiral Chief in Vegas : yes it is the end of February, so what do you mean by that? You have to understand that Colin and I are different in a sense that he has his own business and I am employed and studying at the same time, I am sure you understand. Gavin Mannion : The MSSA is a PRIVATE association not Public. In order for any complaint or question to be entertained, one must go through proper protocol ie through a club chairman and only then the matter would be addressed at a meeting. You did ask for an interview and I told you that I was going to get back to you when I could. Lastly, you are to speak to Mr Colin Webster because he is the general secretary (GS). During his reign he did not have a GS and that is why you dealt with him directly, things have changed. In terms of the question about previously disadvantaged individuals, yes they do not have to pay but it is not based on colour but on the individual circumstances faced.

These are the questions that I am willing to answer. I repeat that the MSSA will only attend to inquiries from members. This principle is simple, do you know of any Federation that would attend to you if you are not registered members? They would tell you to take a hike. Thanks
