Remember Call of Duty Elite – Activision’s stab at turning the CoD community into a social platform (and charging a premium for entertainment and game content at the same time)?
Well, it’s going dark on Friday, 28 February, and Activision said they have no plans to revive the service.
This probably isn’t even of much concern to PC gamers, who were never afforded a version of Elite, or to SA gamers as a whole, since the premium Elite service was not supported in our country.
What does make this interesting, is that Activision says they have taken the most popular features from Call of Duty Elite and condensed them into the free Call of Duty App.
The Elite shut down affects Modern Warfare 3 and Black Ops 2 players. Video content stored in-game will be migrated to the user’s linked personal YouTube account, or to catch-all accounts for Xbox and PS3 versions.
Clans and Clan Management tools will be shut down and handle through the Call of Duty App. Medals earned will no longer be viewable, and lifetime stats will vanish.
The Call of Duty Elite service was launched alongside Modern Warfare 3 on 8 November 2011 and offered the following features:
- Call of Duty community centric social networking platform.
- Matchmaking against friends, similarly skilled community members, those with similar interests.
- System to create and maintain clans, groups, tournaments.
- Extensive statistic tracking, down to minute detail and across all Call of Duty titles supporting Elite.
- Statistic measurement and comparison with other community members and friends.
- Elite will provide a constant stream of events and competitions, matching players with those of similar skill: real world and in-game prizes.
- Premium service to offer entertainment programming and game content.
