MyGaming’s 10 most anticipated games at E3

2 June 2010

Once a year the entire video game industry drops what it’s doing, packs its bags, and heads off to the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in LA. Game developers, publishers, retailers and of course journalists gather from all over the world for what is considered the most intense gaming media blowout of the year.

From announcements, to hands-on demonstrations to panel discussions; E3 has it all. Although there are bound to be loads more games announced at this year’s event, of the confirmed games to be demonstrated, I am most looking forward to these:

Deus Ex: Human Revolution (PC, PS3, 360)

If ever there was a series due a reboot, its Deus Ex. Taking place 25 years before the events of the first game, players will have to make do with biomechanical augmentations as opposed to the nanotechnological ones that were present in Deus Ex. It’s been seven long years, and I for one can’t wait to get a look at Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

New Zelda (Wii)

Nintendo is set to unveil an all new Zelda at this year’s E3. Pretty much every Zelda game ever released has received average review scores of 95/100+, and Zelda: Ocarina of Time is widely considered one of the best games ever made. Needless to say then, that the new unveiling is an exciting prospect.

Star Wars: The Old Republic (PC)

EA has claimed that this MMO based on the StarWars canon will eventually cost more to develop than any other EA game before it. With Bioware heading up the project, there are some pretty high hopes riding on The Old Republic.

Portal 2 (PC, PS3, 360)

Some might argue that the Portal legacy would have been better served had Valve left it at the first game. I for one however can’t wait to see what the developer has planned for the sequel.

The Last Guardian (PS3)

Developed by Team Ico, who bought us the classic Shadow of the Colossus, The Last Guardian is one of the most compelling looking titles currently on the horizon. Revealed at last year’s E3, it should be interesting to see how far the game has come.

XCOM (PC, “console”)

Yet another highly anticipated reboot, XCOM is being called a “reimagining” of the classic PC game series. Unlike the original games, it will be a first-person shooter; a fact which has many sceptical. It is still an exciting prospect though, and I can’t wait to get some time in with this game.

Metroid Other M (Wii)

Set to take place between Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion, Other M marks the long awaited return to the Metroid universe.

Call of Duty: Black Ops (PC, PS3, 360)

Treyarch has traditionally played second fiddle to Infinity Ward when it comes to the Call of Duty brand. This looks set to change though. With Infinity Ward a mere shadow of its former self following the recent mass staff exodus, it looks like Treyarch may be the studio to watch. So far they have yet to put a foot wrong with Black Ops: dedicated servers – check, lean – check, intriguing historical period and captivating plot hints – check.

Medal of Honor (PC, PS3, 360)

EA is hoping to win the FPS genre with its reboot of the iconic Medal of Honor franchise. Whether or not it will be successful in this remains to be seen, but we should start getting a good idea of what to expect at E3.

Mafia II (PC, PS3, 360)

2K’s follow up to the excellent sandbox mafia game, Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven, is yet another big blip on our radar. An open world third person gangster game set n the 1940s, spanning 10 square miles of city, and over 50 period accurate cars – yes please.

Those are obviously not the only games we can’t wait to check out at E3, and the following will also be making an appearance:

Sid Meier’s Civilisation V, Fallout: New Vegas, Crysis 2, Dead Space 2, All Points Bulletin, Bulletstorm, Fable III, Gears of War 3, Halo: Reach, Killzone 3, LBP 2,Gran Turismo 5, Warhammer 40,000 Online, Batman: Arkham Asylum 2, F.E.A.R.3.
