Valve has announced a large update for Team Fortress 2 which will enhance the Engineer class, as well as bring new weapons, achievements and maps. Valve is also using a rather clever method to announce the specifics of the update.
Between now and Thursday, when the patch is rolled out, as gamers build things using the Engineer, they have a chance of receiving a Golden Wrench. Every 25th Wrench handed out unlocks more information about the Team Fortress 2 update. At the time of writing, 59 wrenches have been awarded, a number which can be tracked on the Wrench Log webpage.
With the Wrench Log slowly moving towards 100% complete, one can check out the update info at the Engineer Update webpage. So far we know of ‘The Wrangler,’ a device that replaces the pistol and works by shielding and powering-up turrets, as well as allowing the Engineer to directly aim the sentry gun.
‘Frontier Justice’ has also been uncovered – a new shotgun that gets ‘revenge crits.’ Engineers get two critical hits for every kill the sentry gun has racked up, and one crit for each assist. When the sentry gun is destroyed, the Engineer also receives bonus crits as well.
A new map ‘Upward’ has also been revealed, which looks like a ‘Payload’ map. From the available information it appears to be set in and around an abandoned mine atop a mountain. This update seems poised to bring some exciting changes to the Engineer class, often the forgotten hero of a Team Fortress 2 battle.
