Age of Empires developers busy with “Project S”

8 July 2010

Age of Empires was one of the best early RTS games released, and Halo Wars is considered to be one of, if not, the best console RTSs yet made. Sadly, the developer responsible for these gems – Ensemble Studios – is no more.

But studios never really just go away, and Robot Entertainment was formed by Ensemble founder Tony Goodman as well as other members of the legendary developer.

The Robot Entertainment badge has been spotted on a banner for Microsoft’s next project, currently dubbed “Project S”, featuring a Spartan Warrior in the artwork. The image of the launch screen also depicts a patch box, similar to those seen in many MMORPGS.

Little is known about the game as yet, although we know it will feature quests, units and crafting. Original reports called it a “groundbreaking strategy” game. Rumours suggest the game will have a lot in common with Age of Empires.

It smells to me like an MMORTS with RPG elements thrown in for good measure. We will definitely be keeping an eye on this.
