Brutal Legend 2 cancelled; Schafer announces four projects

Game development veteran Tim Schafer, giving a talk at Develop 2010, has confirmed that there won’t be a sequel to Brutal Legend.

Schafer is behind many classic titles such as Monkey Island, Full Throttle, and Grim Fandango, but in recent years he and his studio Double Fine Productions have had trouble getting their games published.

Their first title was 2005’s critically acclaimed Psychonauts, which was dropped by Microsoft before eventually being published by Majesco Entertainment. Their next title, Brutal Legend was also left in publication limbo when Vivendi Games merged with Activision. EA went on to publish the game, but not before having to deal with a lawsuit from Activision who claimed rights to the title.

Now, Brutal Legend 2 hasn’t even made it off the drawing board. Schafer said “Apparently when [the publisher] said it was a done deal, there was a deal, and it was done.” Schafer outlined the process Double Fine undertook to generate some new concepts, likening it to an internal indie games festival, in which the studio split into four teams and fleshed out new projects.

The best four projects were demonstrated to publishers and soon all were signed. Schafer said that splitting the studio into smaller teams has afforded a degree of creative experimentation, with the studio looking into various genres and demographics, hinting at children’s’ titles. Schafer didn’t reveal details of what these four projects actually are, but he hinted that some may appear this year.

Thanks to Gamespot for Schafer’s talk coverage.
