PlayStation Move Local Pricing and release date

5 August 2010

Local retailer Incredible Connection has revealed SA’s PlayStation Move pricing via its monthly newsletter.

“The Playstation Move will be available at Incredible Connection stores from the 15th of September. The Start Up package will cost R699.95 and the Standalone version will be R449,” reads the newsletter.

This is pretty close to what we predicted based on the international pricing revealed at E3.

The standalone controller will cost $49.99 (R375) in the US, and using the rough 10-1 local conversion ratio we guessed at a sub-R500 price tag. The secondary controller price has not been revealed in SA, although using its US price tag of $29.99 (R225), we are guessing at somewhere between R250-R300.

Incredible Connection’s quoted starter bundle price is much lower than expected however. Based on the $99 (R750) price tag that was quoted at E3, we were anticipating a local bundle at somewhere near the R1000 mark, so to see it for just R699.95 is encouraging.  This bundle will include the Move device, PlayStation Eye camera and a demo disk.

According to Incredible Connection, the Move will be available in SA from September 15. Local PlayStation distributor SterKinekor was able to confirm this as the official local launch date, but was unable to comment on the pricing details at the time of publication.

Mirroring the international market, this puts the PlayStation Move at a significantly lower price point than Microsoft’s own motion control contraption, Kinect.

The Kinect camera setup will retail for R1999, or 4 times the price of the PlayStation Move.
