Rumour: Valve is making a DotA style game

10 August 2010

Jon St. John the man who lent his voice to an icon of gaming, Duke Nukem, set the rumour mill into a frenzied grind when he updated his Twitter account with the following: “Had a great time in Seattle last week recording for DotA. The guys at Valve Software are awesome!” Shortly after posting his Tweet, St. John removed it – the plot thickens.

As some readers may know, Defense of the Ancients (DotA) is a hugely popular WarCraft III custom map in the ‘Aeon of Strife’ style of gameplay. DotA is credited as the inspiration behind a number of titles such as Heroes of Newerth (HoN), League of Legends (LoL), and Demigod.

Could Valve be planning a Source Engine based, DotA inspired game? We at MyGaming sure hope so! We also hope that they follow their recent Alien Swarm example and release it for free.

Last year there were reports of one of DotA’s key developers, David Him AKA Icefrog, joining up with Valve to work on an undisclosed project – news which was probably the  birth of the Valve DotA clone rumour.

Valve has rarely disappointed with their in-house developed games – is the world ready for another Aeon of Strife variant? This could be some serious competition for the likes of HoN and LoL, games which are just beginning to establish themselves as a hardcore PC gaming staple. Perhaps the speculation is best left until an official announcement is made by Valve, but until then, we can dream of what may be.
