RAGE release date confirmed

16 August 2010

RAGE, the hybrid first person shooter and racing game from id Software has been dated by the developer. The Xbox 360, PS3 and PC platforms will see the game on 13 September 2011 in North America. Europe, and therefore South Africa, follows two days later on 15 September 2011.

The title was announced back in 2007. The information revealed so far pegs it as a post-apocalyptic shooter, with a heavy focus on driving elements. Of course, it is much more than a mere game from id Software, as this will also be the debut of their new proprietary 3D engine – id Tech 5.

The post-apocalyptic wasteland environment was created by an asteroid impact. In order to preserve the human race, underground ‘Arks’ were created, into which the greatest and brightest minds were placed. The Arks cryogenically freeze these people, so they might one day rebuild the Earth.

Unfortunately, things didn’t go smoothly, and a lot of the Arks have malfunctioned. The world will be populated will mutants, which serve as the main enemies for the first half of the game. id has hinted that they have a major twist in store for the halfway point.

Players will traverse the desolate environments in their rough-and-tumble dune buggy styled vehicles. Visually, things are looking quite impressive – we’d expect no less from id, whom have proven that they can animate regular humans quite effectively, having moved away from their usual hell spawn specialty.
