Ever wondered why there are no ladders in Fallout or Oblivion?

16 August 2010

According to IGN, Bethesda’s Todd Howard admitted during a Quakecon panel that there are no ladders in Fallout or Elder Scrolls because they would cause problems with their AI.

“Play our game; find a ladder that you can use. We don’t have them,” said Howard. “One day, we tried to figure out why we wanted ladders so bad because we don’t really need them. It just felt like we’re game development pussies because we can’t do ladders.”

So there you have it. As it turned out, the best work around to their ladder AI problem was to just make games entirely devoid of ladders. Some might call it a cop-out, but I sure didn’t miss them. Both games went on to receive a variety of accolades, including Game of the Year awards, as well as perform excellently at retail. ALL WITHOUT LADDERS!
