Ubisoft isn’t exactly the most innovative developer at the moment, so the announcement of a new Assassin’s Creed trilogy is hardly going to blow your hair back. That said, Assassin’s Creed Chronicles is a little different from what you’re used to seeing from the franchise, quite literally in this case.
Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China, India and Russia look to be inspired by Child of Light and Valiant Hearts: The Great War; we’re talking aesthetic design here and it’s actually rather flattering. Speaking of which, is it just us or is Chronicles’ visual style somewhat reminiscent of Prince of Persia from 2008, albeit with a lot more colour and pizzazz?
As far as we know, Assassin’s Creed Chronicles follows a brief stint in the lives of three cult assassins from, as you would have deduced by now, China, India and Russia. Its 2.5D approach is something we’ve known about for a while now, ever since Chronicles: China was announced as part of Assassin’s Creed Unity season pass. But it’s still an interesting prospect. There’s definitely a lot of potential to do all sorts of things with this new perspective, like a more engaging and challenging combat system for one! Although the trailer isn’t all that promising on that front.
As far as the three titles are concerned, China takes place in “1526, as the Ming dynasty starts to crumble”. You’ll play Shao Jun, the last Assassin of the Chinese Brotherhood and trained by Ezio Auditore himself. Being the last remaining assassin, you’re going to do whatever is required of you to avenge your fallen brethren.
And as for India and Russia, well they take place in very different time periods from one another – and from China for that matter. Unsurprisingly, they also seem to be about avenging one thing or another. The stories are a little cliché, but that’s no train smash.
We just hope the prices for each title are within reason and not an excuse to pump out more content, when China alone would have been enough. The nationally-inclined artistic flair of each title had better not be the only difference between each three. Introduce new mechanics in each please, Ubisoft. Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China starts the journey on April 22nd on PC, Xbox One and PS4.
One last thing: It’s pretty standard for Ubisoft to spend many an hour or more picking just the right song for each Assassin’s Creed trailer, was it just right this time? Did you enjoy the trailer? Let us know, as well as what you think of the trilogy in general, in the comments and forums.
