Trine 3’s third dimension doesn’t detract from its charm

Trine 3

The first thing we noticed about Trine 3: The Artifacts of Power is that it still maintains the same level of charm the previous Trine games did – it might even do a better job of it.

When we heard that Trine 3 was going 3D, we were a little concerned that it would lose its character, its persona. And we aren’t just talking about its aesthetic merit, its quirky style or humorous narration but the sum of its parts. Sure, you might argue that it’s merely adding a new dimension; that’s a gain and not a loss. But many a game has lost a lot during similar transitions. That said, Trine 3 looks great. Check it out:

You’ll notice that, quite remarkably, Frozenbyte has managed to maintain largely the same perspective as Trine 1 and 2, but without sacrificing the advantages of being a 3D game. It’s also clear that there’s still a lot of room for puzzles and intelligent, enjoyable design.

We don’t want to spoil the video for you, but we will say that it’s graphically really quite beautiful. We can’t wait to play it.

Expect Trine 3 to come to PC first, but that it should hit more platforms sometime after that.
