It has emerged that Zenimax Media, Bethesda Softworks’ parent company, has made a new trademark application related to Oblivion, the fourth iteration of The Elder Scrolls series.

The trademark specifically pertains to “motion picture film production; entertainment services, namely, providing motion picture theatrical films in the field of fantasy games.”

The conjecture is that Zenimax is just protecting the Oblivion IP, but could they know something the rest of us don’t? Better yet, could they actually be planning an Elder Scrolls movie of some kind?

The Oblivion setting would probably translate well into movie format – how can you go wrong with high fantasy and CGI hellfire and inferno? The game word is rich in canon and I personally think it has some great movie potential. I’m envisioning something with Lords of the Rings production values, scope and scale. Let’s just hope the actors are a little less wooden than the Oblivion NPCs.
