Just admit that when virtual reality rose back into prominence, primarily thanks to the Oculus Rift, your first was about porn. If you said no, you’re lying.
The idea of VR porn has very likely fuelled the less-than-dry dreams of many a nerd, and it looks like their dreams may become a reality.
At a Silicon Valley Virtual Reality Conference, Oculus founder, Palmer Luckey, told entertainment news source Variety that, “The rift is an open platform. We don’t control what software can run on it. And that’s a big deal.”
For those of you more conservative folk out there, try not to freak out.
Firstly, if you don’t like it, don’t use your personal Oculus Rift for that sort of thing. Harsh as it may sound, your discomfort is far less important than maintaining an open platform.
Those open platform policies will allow for and encourage a greater assortment of VR media production, a fairer expression of individuality, which includes the potential for feminine expression, and a whole lot more good stuff.
Perhaps most importantly is the fact that an open platform, as well as a lack of censorship or content blocking policies, means that parent company Facebook has less power over the platform. That’s a good thing.
Plus, you know…

We needn’t tell you what’s behind the blur – Image courtesy of KitGuru
At a supported resolution of 2160×1200 at 90Hz, you can expect a minimum of around 233 million pixels worth of skin-on-skin action per second. Chief Architect at Oculus, Atman Binstock, predicts a much more impressive 400 million shaded pixels per second.
We don’t need to tell you what that means. Confused? Let this decidedly detailed image, or pair of boo images, give you a sneak peak.
Excited as you might be about these new prospects for Oculus Rift, keep in mind that it’s going to be a rather expensive piece of kit to support.
It’s a demanding piece of hardware.
