Myst movie in the works

5 October 2010

The Myst series of games first appeared on PC in 1993. Developed by Cyan Worlds, the game was a point-and-click adventure/puzzle game which featured high resolution (for the time) pre-rendered scenes. The game is noted for being one of the catalyzing titles for the success of the fledgling multimedia CD-ROM technology, and for being diabolically difficult to solve.

In the game, players took on the role of a The Stranger, whom stumbles across a mysterious book titled ‘Myst.’ Reading through the book, The Stranger places his hand on the last page, and is transported to the world of Myst. To escape the world, The Stranger must solve some perplexing riddles and solve numerous puzzles. The game featured multiple endings linked to moral choices – quite a mindbender for the time.

Myst has since spawned four sequels: Riven; Myst III: Exile; Myst IV: Revelation; and Myst V: End of Ages. Now it appears that a Myst based movie is in the works, as reported by Hollywood industry rag, Variety.

“Roserock Films and Gran Via Productions are partnering to produce a feature version of vidgame franchise Myst. The banners are teaming with Adrian Vanderbosch and Isaac Testerman of Mysteria Film Group, which obtained the rights from game developers Cyan Worlds,” reports Variety.

The Myst series has an extensive backstory, which spans the five aforementioned games and a series of novels, explaining the origins of a civilization known as D’ni and their ability to create and control an infinite number of worlds. Apparently this was more than enough to get Hollywood creative types thinking.

“Our aim with this project is to stretch the genres it operates within, much like the source material did. It is such an innovative property and the best service we can do to it is to maintain that spirit. By utilizing the novels as our primary source, we have the opportunity to offer audiences the essence of Myst without being limited only to the famous island of the first game,” said Vanderbosch.
