The results from a survey operated by research firm Interpret suggest that the majority of consumers either do not really understand the current generation of 3D entertainment, or are not in a mad rush to drop their hard earned cash on it.
1 500 consumers aged 12-65 were polled, and asked what they liked and did not like about 3D home entertainment.
Interpret’s Muchael Cai presented the survey findings at the Game Developers Conference Online yesterday.
According to Cai, of the sample sub-group who indicated that they planned on purchasing a new HDTV in the next year, just 13 percent will “definitely buy” a 3D ready panel. Ten percent said they “definitely will not” purchase a 3D television.
Of those who are planning on purchasing a 3DTV, the primary reason for wanting to do so is to create a “movie theatre” experience in their homes.
Of those who said they did not wish to buy a 3DTV, the primary reason given was the premium price tags these sets come with. Sixty-nine percent of those not keen on 3DTV gave this as their primary reason, while 46 percent said that having to wear special 3D glasses put them off the technology.
When looking specifically at gamers, who are generally perceived as being more tech savy than regular consumers, 63 percent wrongfully believed that all that was required to upgrade to 3D was a console firmware update. Eighty-three percent believe that special glasses are required to enjoy 3D entertainment, which is true for the most part, for now.
In order to enjoy 3D entertainment in your home, you currently require a stereoscopic-capable 3D television as well as the 3D glasses. On top of that, you need a 3D Blu Ray player, or 3D compatible console. Even once you have all this, finding 3D ready content, especially in SA, is no easy task.
The fact that that 3D entertainment has been reworked so many times over the last few years does not help the case for the technology, which many think will simply not catch on in any mainstream capacity.
