R1,000,000 cash prizes for new Telkom DGL Masters

Telkom announced on Thursday (21 January) that it would be putting up a million rand in prize money for its new Do Gaming League in 2016.

This is to support its plans to foster massive growth in the competitive online gaming arena, and formalise e-sports in South Africa.

Contenders in Telkom’s new Masters league will be in-line for a share of the winnings, with 8 clans set to compete in the 2016 tournament.

Telkom said it would build the brands of the teams playing in the Masters while they compete.

It would also be supporting its launch of the Masters with network improvements throughout the year, new servers, and new software for the Do Gaming League.

The new league software will enable more gamers to participate in the year-long league, Telkom said, as it aims to increase the league numbers from 6,000 gamers to 100,000.

Teams will be playing DOTA 2 and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, with the prize money split evenly between the two games.

All Masters players can expect to be paid for competing, with the cash prizes varying between R200,000 cash for first place winners, and R50,000 for the teams that come last.

In addition to launching the Masters competition for its Do Gaming League, Telkom also invited all “like-minded partners” to get involved with building e-sports in South Africa.
