Diablo’s original pitch released after 20 years

21 March 2016
Diablo 1

Close to 20 years after the release of Blizzard’s critical and public hit Diablo, David Brevik, one of the co-creators of the game, has shared with the public the original pitch documents for Diablo.

This all happened at GDC (the Game Developers Conference), where Brevik held a session all centred on Diablo.

It was there that Brevik promised to share the pitch documents with the community. These documents can now be downloaded in PDF format.

The documentation gives us great insight into the original concept behind Diablo and how this all led up to the first game in the massively successful series.

Here are some insights from the document, such as:

Diablo fills a neglected niche in the computer game market. As games today substitute gameplay with multimedia extravaganzas, and strive toward needless scale and complexity, we seek to reinvigorate the hack and slash, feel good gaming audience. Emphasis will be on exploration, conflict and character development in a dark quest for justice.

There were even mentions of development time interestingly enough, which you can see below:

Personnel will consist of: one designer; one chief programmer and two junior programmer; two art director/artists; one illustrator/sculptor and three pixel artist/illustrators; and one music/sound effects person.

Expansions were also mentioned in the original documentation. However, the only authorised expansion was Diablo: Hellfire released in 1997.

Who would think that this was the seed that started the whole Diablo franchise off? You would have never dreamed of this back in the day.
