Ubisoft uses vuvuzela to combat piracy

3 December 2010

Don’t let anyone tell you that the Soccer World Cup 2010 did nothing to elevate South Africa’s status as a global super power. If anything, people around the world now know us as “that country with the really irritating, obnoxiously loud horn instrument,” also referred to as the vuvuzela.

Ubisoft has even gone as far as to use the vuvuzela sound effect to deter pirates from getting their hands on the DS version of Michael Jackson: The Experience. Instead of MJ’s classic pop tracks, the pirated version of the game blasts the vuvuzela sound effect, rendering the game unplayable. Crucial on-screen prompts are also disabled in the pirated version.

In fact, the concept of a Michael Jackson themed video game, combined with the obnoxious wail of the afformentioned noise device is just about enough to put me off games for life.
