Rumour: Tomb Raider reboot launch date

9 December 2010

This week kicked off with some welcomed news – the reboot of a franchise that has become staple in the gaming world, Tomb Raider.

A new-look Lara Croft will be thrown into an ‘origins’ tale that sees her stranded on an island and fighting for survival. This is a complete reboot of the franchise, which will no doubt pave the way for a number of sequels.

There are open world mechanics, free-look aiming, rich survival gameplay, and strong character development promised. Crystal Dynamics is behind the title – the same developer behind the successful download-only Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light.

Previous rumours had slated the title for a Christmas 2011 release, but that’s a pretty obvious release date for folks to hedge their bets upon.

Now UK online retailer Shopto.net is listing the game as available on pre-order. This is not an unknown tactic by online retailers, whom will gladly take people’s money ahead of an eventual release of a game.

Shopto has taken things a step further however, issuing a fairly firm promise: “If you pre-order Tomb Raider before 12pm on Wednesday 7th of September 2011 we will guarantee that you will receive it by the release date of Friday 9th of September 2011, if you do not receive it we will compensate you with £3.00 on your shopto account.”

Now things are still firmly in rumour territory until Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics issue an official release date, but this seems like a fairly reasonable date for what is bound to be a large AAA launch close to the 2011 holiday season.
