Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim announced, trailered, launch dated

13 December 2010

After years of desperate anticipation, Bethesda has finally announced a sequel to forever ago’s The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

The game has apparently been in development for two years or so already, but – contrary to immediate speculation – it’s not built on Oblivion’s (and Fallout 3’s, and Fallout: New Vegas’s) now rather decrepit Gamebryo engine, but a rather “a new graphics/gameplay engine built internally”, according to Bethesda’s community manager, Nick Breckon.

Anyway, Skyrim comes in as a direct sequel to Oblivion, and the area it’s named for has featured previously in Elder Scrolls’ titles. The game’s scheduled for launch on 11 November 2011.
