Nintendo issues 3DS health warning

29 December 2010

Nintendo intends to launch their 3DS handheld gaming platform in March 2011. The Japanese market will receive the device on 26 February 2011. In the run up to the launch, Nintendo is getting the 3DS ready for its first public showing.

The company has also issued some health warnings regarding the new device.

Nintendo says that 3D gaming can cause eye fatigue faster than traditional 2D gaming screens. They also point out that people with impaired vision, corrective lenses, or vision problems affecting each eye differently may have discomfort while playing with the 3DS.

The recommendation for a healthy person playing on the 3DS is to take a break every 30 minutes to avoid eye strain.

The 3DS also comes equipped with a 3D slider which can adjust the 3D effects, right back down to a 2D image. This is so that people experiencing discomfort can adjust the games to their preference.

Nintendo also recommends that children of age 6 years and younger do not play any 3D games. The company points out that children of this age should also not be viewing 3D movies. At this tender age, children’s vision is still developing, and the long-term effects of 3D viewing at this age are not yet known.

Nintendo is including parental controls in the 3DS device to assist parents in regulating their children’s gaming habits.
