Marvel vs Capcom 3: matchmaking system pits ragequitters against ragequitters

12 January 2011

In what might well be the most brilliant move ever in the history of moving stuff, Capcom’s upcoming brawler, Marvel vs Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds, features a simple matchmaking profile algorithm that will seperate the ragequitters from the gamers that can conduct themselves with dignity.

Basically, the system maintains an invisible stat sheet of players’ habits, taking particular note of their tendency to ragequit games because losing would utterly destroy their fragile sense of self. That way, persistent ragequitters will be pitted against other persistent ragequitters, leaving everybody else to get on with the not-so-serious business of playing games for fun.

Bungie has a similar system in place in Halo: Reach’s matchmaking software that automatically mutes players who’ve been consistently muted by other players in previous matches. They also temporarily ban ragequitters for a cooldown period, although I think Capcom’s solution is far more effective in the long term.

Now someone just has to work out how to eliminate everybody under 25, people who use the term “noob” without a sense of irony, and anybody else I don’t like, and online multiplayer can be nice again.
