The worst marketing ideas in videogame history

29 June 2016

Mighty No.9 recently caused controversy after its launch trailer seemingly made fun of its paying customers.

While obnoxious and mean-spirited, its by no means the worst game advertorial ever, which got us thinking about the real train-wrecks from videogame history.

Check out the worst videogame advertisements of all time:

If your console’s advert is taking cues from several horror movies, while not actually showing what your product does, then you are probably doing something wrong.

Daikatana – “John Romero’s about to make you his bitch.”

Dead Space 2 – Your Mom Hates Dead Space 2

Nothing makes a videogame “edgier” than your mom’s disapproval.

Mercenaries 2 – Free petrol

The marketing team behind Mercenaries 2 caused chaos when they offered free petrol in several major cities around the world.

The resulting traffic caused in parts of London and Los Angeles actually forced the authorities to close the promotion down.

SEGA’s “clever” wordplay and weird sexual innuendo can only leave us scratching our heads.

Sega

PS VITA – Sexism controversy

Sony some how managed to offend both its core audience and women all over the world.

Sony-Sexist

The company then managed to follow it up with this “sexy doctor” ad for PS4 remote-play compatibility:
