PSP2 as powerful as PS3 says Codemasters CEO

25 January 2011

With Sony holding its “PlayStation” conference this Friday, gamers around the world are eagerly anticipating the announcement of its next generation portable gaming device, dubbed the PSP2. A Japanese newspaper last week reported that the PSP2 will be released this year. It is rumoured to be touting an OELD display and it will be the first 3G enabled handheld gaming device in the world. Of course, these claims remained unconfirmed by Sony, as does the existence of the new portable gaming device.

The fact that Sony is keeping a lid on the announcement has not stopped Codemasters CEO Rod Cousens from talking about the PSP2 to Eurogamer. Cousens went as far as to confirm that rumours which claim the PSP2 is as powerful as the PS3 are in fact true.

“In portable areas, you’re going to have statements, which are already out in the press, saying PlayStation Portable 2 is as powerful as the PS3 – which is true,” said Cousens to Eurogamer, whilst sharing his thoughts on the state of portable gaming.

Cousens told Eurogamer that he believes the device will “jump start” the industry in 2011, and that it will be “absolutely enormous and open software opportunities for the creative process.” He also said that he expects the PSP2 to drop to below £200 (R2200) before “too long.”

If the PSP2 is released this year, it will compete directly with Nintendo’s 3DS, which has been confirmed for release on March 25. The 3DS will cost $249.99 (±R1750), although a price has yet to be confirmed for PAL regions, South Africa included.
