As expected, Sony this morning revealed its next generation mobile gaming device, which is currently being called NGP (Next Generation Portable), but is really just the PSP2. The announcement was made at a conference dubbed the PlayStation Meeting, which took place in Tokyo Japan.
PlayStation Suite
Sony kicked the conference off by announcing a new service called PlayStation Suite, which will supposedly allow Sony to deliver PlayStation content to mobile phones which run on Android OS.
Sony Computer Entertainment president, Kaz Hirai, mentioned that Sony wants to bring “legendary PlayStation content” to PlayStation suite, a process which will be made possible thanks to a “hardware-neutral game framework” which allows “PlayStation-quality” content to be ported across to various kinds of mobile hardware.
“We envision PS Suite as an initiative that is essential to the world of portable entertainment,” said Kaz Hirai.
PSP2
Next, Sony went on to announce NGP – Next Generation Portable, which is code for the PSP2. The device will promise a “revolutionary control system, location based entertainment, social connection, augmented reality features,” and of course” PS Suite compatibility.
Sony’s NGP features arear touchpad, 3G as well as WiFi for internet connectivity, Sixaxis motion control, and threeaxis compass. A 5-inch multi-touch OLED display was also confirmed, which is significantly larger than the PSP’s 3.5-inch screen. The new display will boast a resolution four times greater than the PSP’s. Front and rear cameras were also announced – these will supposedly ‘augment your gaming experience with reality.’
Dual analogue controllers were also confirmed, which will supposedly work in conjunction with the touch and motion controls.
The claim that the PSP2 will be as powerful as the PS3 was not confirmed, however, Hirai did mention that the device will deliver PS3-quality graphics.
The PSP2 will be released in the holiday season 2011, just in time for Christmas. Pricing has not been confirmed.
