February game release calendar

31 January 2011

January kicked 2011 off to a good start for gamers, with no less than three highly anticipated games hitting store shelves. PS3 owners finally got a taste of Bioware’s epic sci-fi franchise with Mass Effect 2, as well as a sequel to the 2008 platforming classic, LittleBigPlanet. Then of course there was Dead Space 2, which was released just a few days ago for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. These three games alone could keep the average gamer busy for months, but of course, the wheels of industry keep on turning, and February has its own lineup of delicious looking titles set for release.

First up, is Two Worlds II which was originally due out months ago. While European gamers got their hands on the fantasy RPG late last year, it’s UK and North American release was pushed back to January 25. We have been unable to nail down a concrete local release date, but Take2.co.za reckon they will have stock from today onwards. Other local retailers suggest an unspecific January release.

Next we have an all new IP in the form of Bulletstorm. Bulletstorm is a balls-to-the-wall shooter that promises to never take itself seriously. The game takes place in a futuristic paradise governed by The Federation, who uses a group of mercenaries called Dead Echo to maintain power. When various members of Dead Echo realise that The Federation are actually the bad guys, havoc ensues. Don’t be put off by the tired premise, Bullestorm looks like an incredible game. Combat incorporates a point system which encourages players to get creative with their killing, and the game world looks just phenomenal. EA plans to release Bulletstorm globally for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 in February 22, and it looks set to land in SA on February 25.

The last of February’s big hitters is a PS3 exclusive shooter; Killzone 3. The PS3’s FPS poster-boy needs little introduction. Killzone 3 promises to be technically brilliant, combining the franchise’s high end visuals with 3D as well as PlayStation Move support. Killzone 3 is planned for local release on February 23.

Other than that, there are a handful of lower profile, yet interesting looking games due out in the coming month.
