A lot has been made of the supposed PlayStation Phone from Sony, but there has yet to be any official announcement.
Last month when Sony announced its NGP (Next Generation Portable), the company also lifted the lid on a new innovation dubbed PlayStation Suite, which will allow PlayStation games to be played on various mobile devices using Android OS. Sony did not specifically mention the PlayStation Phone, but the move to bring the PlayStation experience to mobile handsets definitely got people talking.
Today Sony released some official comment on the unnanounced device, and it looks like we can expect a big reveal on Sunday, 13 February.
“Sony Ericsson welcomes Sony Computer Entertainment’s announcement to bring PlayStation Suite content to the Android platform. Sony Ericsson’s strategy to bring together the best communication and entertainment experiences in mobile devices is fully in line with this and other Sony Group initiatives. Whilst we do not comment on future products our intention is to continue to launch a number of exciting Xperia smartphones to the market in 2011 and we can confirm that our next product announcement will take place on February 13th at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.”
In case this is not an obvious enough pre-announcement for the PlayStation Phone, Sony Ericsson has also created a Facebook event page for the launch. Although it does not explicitly mention any names, it brandishes an image of the device which has unofficially been labelled the PlayStation Phone, featuring the trademark PlayStation control layout.
Despite all this PR quickstepping by Sony, the cat has pretty much been let out of the bag already, with Engadget posting an ‘exclusive’ hands-on feature on the Xperia Play.
